Planning your dream wedding on a budget

Written and accurate as at: Jun 15, 2026 Current Stats & Facts

For many couples, a wedding is one of the biggest expenses they'll face outside of buying a home. Between the venue, outfits, and catering for a guest list that might stretch into the hundreds, it’s easy to see how wedding budgets can spiral. The reality, though, is that many of those costs are optional.

Whether you're saving for a home, planning a honeymoon or simply don't want to spend a small fortune on a single day, there are plenty of ways to usher in married life in a way that’s both memorable and affordable.

Prioritise the things most important to you

Before locking in venues or vendors, sit down together and decide what matters most to you. Laying out your priorities early on can help you spend intentionally instead of being pulled along by custom or social media trends. You can then cut back in other areas as needed, whether that means ditching the multi-day hen’s trip or trading the live music for a well-curated playlist.

Keep the guest list small

More people means a bigger venue, more food and drinks, and – ultimately – more hassle. Choosing to keep things small can create a more relaxed atmosphere and gives you more time to actually enjoy the people who matter most.

Buy second-hand

Online marketplaces are flooded with second-hand signage, bud vases, crockery and, yes, even wedding attire that are just waiting to be snapped up. Try to keep an eye out early for items you need – not only can it save you from buying brand new, but it also gives perfectly good items a second life instead of sending them to landfill.

Send digital invitations instead of paper ones

Yes, there’s something about the textured paper and embossed lettering of a wedding invitation that just feels special, but they’re surprisingly expensive once you factor in printing and postage. Digital invitations can feel just as thoughtful and polished, and also make it easier to manage RSVPs and dietary requirements.

Choose an all-in-one venue

Many venues offer packages for couples who want to host their ceremony and reception in one spot. These can offer great value for money, but they also eliminate the need to travel midway through the festivities. No rushing between points A and B makes the day feel more seamless for your guests and allows everyone to settle in and enjoy the day.

Cake alternatives

Dessert is always a crowd pleaser, but ask anyone who recently attended a wedding and they’ll tell you they were more interested in enjoying themselves than whether the cake arrived on a three-tier stand. For more budget-friendly alternatives, smaller cakes, pastries from a local bakery, or even gelato are sure to go over well.

Recruit the wedding party’s help where you can

Chances are there’s someone in your circle who enjoys baking, arranging flowers, designing invitations or putting together playlists. Why not ask them to lend a hand? People are usually happy to contribute, especially if it means playing a more personal role in your special day. Just make sure the people whose help you enlist are reliable enough to follow through on their commitments.

Consider an elopement

If you've ever been part of a wedding party, you'll know just how quickly the costs can add up. And if not, chances are you've heard stories from friends whose wedding budgets spiralled out of control. It can be enough to make you want to elope – and you know what? For some couples that might actually be the right decision.

Choosing to elope can free up money for other priorities, whether that's a home deposit or a dream holiday. And holding a more intimate celebration may feel far more authentic if being the centre of attention isn't really your thing. After all, a wedding is about making a commitment to each other, not putting on a performance for everyone else.
